Watch Out For These Common Winter Plumbing Problems

Winter is upon us again, which means there’s a whole new host of plumbing problems to be aware of. Decreasing temperatures can wreak havoc on your home’s plumbing system, causing leakage, flooding and other forms of plumbing-related water damage. Luckily, most winter plumbing problems that you may experience in your home are easily avoidable with a few simple preventative measures. Here are a few of the most common winter plumbing disasters and what you can do to avoid them.

Frozen Pipes

When the temperatures get especially cold, the water in your pipes may freeze. Not only will this disrupt your access the water—your pipes could even burst under the pressure of the frozen water, which can cause flooding and structural damage. Prevent your pipes from freezing by maintaining an average room temperature throughout your home during the winter. If you do experience frozen pipes, shut off your main water valve immediately to elevate pressure from your pipes.

Hot Water Heater Failures

Taking more hot baths and showers during the winter months can take its toll on your hot water heater. If your hot water heater stops generating hot water, the solution may be as simple as checking the temperature gauge. By lowering the temperature of your hot water heater even just by a few degrees, you can help to prevent it from overworking and breaking down. It’s fine to take hot baths and showers during the winter, but make sure you don’t overdo it—not only will this cause your hot water heater to overwork, it also may cost you in expensive utility bills.
