Plumbing systems have gradually evolved over the years to the point that most people take them for granted. As long as the water is supplied to the faucet, drains from the fixture, and doesn’t leak, the homeowner is under the impression that everything is okay. And that may be the case. But there are also numerous circumstances where everything appears to be functioning properly but the plumbing system or unit is on the verge of malfunctioning.
All plumbing systems will require maintenance as they age. Joints will loosen, valves will be hard to turn, pipes will corrode, and drain lines will back up, to name just a few common problems. Fortunately, most of these can easily be corrected if attended to as soon as they become apparent. If ignored, leakage can be sudden and cause significant consequential damage and expense.
The two most common problems with drain systems are blocked drains and leakage. Backup can occur from gradual buildup of roots and hardened waste. It can be a gradually worsening condition or become apparent very suddenly as something gets hung up on the buildup and blocks the ever narrowing opening.
Therefore, it is important to address any sluggish drain condition promptly before major blockage and consequential damage occurs. In some cases, it may be determined that buried or underground lines are the source of the blockage. This is particularly common in houses that have been vacant for a while but is hard to predict.
