The Most Common Causes of Drain Clogs

Drain clogs are some of the most common plumbing emergencies, and in our experience there are a few things that routinely cause these clogs. Below are the most common causes of drain clogs that we’ve seen over our years of plumbing service in Toronto.

Grease

This is probably the most common culprit when it comes to drain clogging. It’s probably because the drain is usually close to the stove and so many people cook foods that create a lot of grease or fat. It can be tempting to just wash the pan in the sink and be done with it or pour the leftovers down the drain, but it is terrible for your system. Chances are that it is going to harden and cause you to get a visit from one of our friendly professionals.

Food

Next on the list is food. A lot of people think that they can just throw their scraps into the sink or wash a plate full of food just as is. This will cause a lot of excess food to get into the drain and cause problems. Make sure to scrape your food off of your plate before washing it, and thoroughly remove as much gunk as possible when doing so.

Hair

Although men would have you believe that it’s the ladies that cause this problem, it is actually both sexes that bear the responsibility here. So much hair gets down a shower drain when we bathe or down the sink when we shave. This clogs things up immediately. Try to remove the hair and throw it out rather than wash it down the drain. It may be nasty, but it is worth it.

We’ve seen a lot of major plumbing issues throughout our years here in Toronto, and we’re happy to help with them. When you have a clogged drain in your home, trust your friendly Toronto plumbing professionals to come to your rescue.
